Pediatric Dentistry Leawood KS

Dental needs in children, especially those who do not have permanent teeth yet, are often overlooked. Neglecting dental care in those formative years is a mistake. Here at Dental Expressions, Dr. Bhoot knows the importance of treating pediatric patients and has the skills to help even the youngest patients with all their dental needs.

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is the field of dentistry that involves working with patients from the ages of 0-18 years. There are unique needs in that age group, and dentists who work with those patients are trained to handle those unique needs. Children can start to see their first teeth around the six-month mark, and age-related dental needs can show up soon after. It is recommended that children have their first dental visit with six months of their first tooth breaking through the gum.

Pediatric dental services

These are the services we offer for the youngest patients at our office:

Tooth extractions– extractions can happen, especially in primary teeth. The reason could range from anything to decay, damage, or making room for permanent teeth. We use both local and general anesthesia to make our young patients comfortable. We give detailed instructions on how to care for the extraction site to the parents.

Mouth guards– sports play a significant role in the lives of many of our young patients. As fun as sports are to play, there are risks that come with that. Any type of hit to the face can cause damage or loss of teeth. We help fit our young patients with mouth guards that allow them to play the sports they love while protecting their mouths.

Sealants– sealants help protect teeth, especially back molars, from all the candies that kids love to eat. Having regular coats of sealants applied helps protect the ridges and grooves in those teeth from cavities and decay.

Fluoride treatments– fluoride is essential for the preservation of one’s natural teeth. We will apply a layer of fluoride to your child’s teeth, as well as recommend kinds of toothpaste and other products that contain this essential ingredient.

Pulp treatments– tooth decay is a large problem in children. Even though primary teeth eventually fall out, they still play a vital role in your child’s dental health. To preserve the baby tooth for as long as possible, we will treat the damaged pulp to preserve the life and health of the tooth. Pulp treatments are also needed when a tooth has sustained damage, like those suffered while playing sports.

Preventative care– teaching kids early about the importance of their dental health is crucial. We provide preventative care to our youngest patients, and we work to educate the patient and parents on what at-home preventive treatment looks like.

Digital x-rays– gone are the old style of x-rays that required films. Our office now offers digital x-rays to our patients. These are more comfortable, and being able to watch pictures of their mouth appear in real-time helps keep a child’s attention and interest in the process. In addition to being more comfortable, digital x-rays are also safer and produce less radiation.
